Koskela Gallery and Spinifex Hill Studio are excited to present Doreen Chapman: Looking, Looking, Painting, a joyful exhibition of acrylic paintings.

      Big Colour | Singapore
Big Colour, held in conjunction with RedDot Fine Art Gallery presents the work of Martu artist Gloria.
Gloria paints one day a week at Spinifex Hill Studio, and on one particular day she effortlessly moved her paintbrush all around and over one of her canvases. Her smile lit up the room and everyone in it. Once the moment was over and she stood back from what she had done, Gloria whispered “Big Colour”.
Born in the Pilbara in 1975, Gloria is a Martu woman working within a powerful matriarchal tradition that emerged from Australia’s Western Desert in the early 2000s. Her loose brushwork and pastel palettes have attracted critical attention for their highly affecting presence.

This is how we see 'em | Sydney
This is how we see ‘em presents the work of three leading artists from Spinifex Hill Studio.
Spinifex Hill Studio is a place where people come together to connect through a passion for family, culture, and art.
“Everyone here is all related or connected, there’s no arguments, there’s happy feelings in here.” Sheila Gardiner, daughter of Nyaparu (William) Gardiner (1943-2018) and Nyangulya Katie Nalgood
This couldn’t be truer for exhibiting artists Nyangulya Katie Nalgood, the late Nyaparu (William) Gardiner, and Winnie Sampi, who have shared a unique bond at the art centre. Nyangulya Katie Nalgood and Winnie Sampi both migrated from the Kimberley region and Spinifex Hill Studio has functioned as a place to connect them, while Nyaparu (William) Gardiner and Winnie Sampi re-connected at Spinifex Hill Studio having gone to school together. Nyaparu would always bring his guitar into the art centre and everyone would sing along with him.
Even though Nyaparu (William) Gardiner has passed way, Nyangulya and Winnie still continue to share photos and memories with one another and enjoy seeing each other at the art centre. It means they can stay connected with each other and stay connected to him.

I Been Born There, Maggie Green | Melbourne
Maggie Green’s debut solo show at The Design Files Collect, Melbourne
I Been Born There comprises works inspired by Green’s childhood at Myroodah Station in Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region, where she grew up, went to school, worked, went fishing and swimming, and collected bush tucker.
Created from densely-layered fields of coloured dot work, Green’s canvases are semi-abstract renderings of landscape. The works translate the memories of her childhood into geometric compositions of glowing pastel colour, occasionally punctuated by figurative landscape elements.
Due to COVID-19, this exhibition could not open to the public, however you can view the artworks online here and take a virtual walk through below.

Always on the move by Doreen Chapman
Doreen Chapman is one of the hottest contemporary artists in the Pilbara. As a deaf woman, painting is a crucial medium of communication and storytelling.
Over the past decade, Chapman has earned a growing national reputation for her figurative paintings in vivid pastel colours.
Always on the move is Chapman’s first interstate exhibition, premiering 18 recent works focused on travel and flight, as befits an artist who loves travelling to attend her exhibition openings and meet her fans.
This exhibition documents Chapman’s encounters and observations of items during her travels between Perth and the Pilbara region’s remote communities, that have sparked curiosity.

Jalmarra-jarti by Nyangulya Katie Nalgood at Paul Johnstone Gallery, Darwin
Gallerist Paul Johnstone fell in love with Nyangulya’s birds at Salon De Refuses in 2018. Now he’s exhibiting her work at his gallery in Darwin.
Nyangulya Katie Nalgood has a strong affinity with birds, the diverse feathered creatures filling her personal history as well as cultural life. They are as much a part of her Country as she is, and their songs are the sound memories of her home. Nalgood started out painting only the birds native to her Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, and collaborated with family members to help her sketch out their forms. Her technical skill has since become more refined, and she now works independently. Her imagination has also expanded, and she looks to birds from across Western Australia, finding inspiration in their different colours, forms, and personalities.

Captain Head and Layne Dhu-Dicki visit Adelaide
Dhu-Dickie and his family travelled to Adelaide alongside a small contingent of Spinifex Hill Artists to represent the art centre at Tarnanthi 2019.
Layne starred in the contemporary exhibition held at Art Gallery of South Australia alongside Spinifex Hill Artists, Nyaparu William Gardiner. The original drawings to Layne’s, Captain Hedland vs. The Fisherman lined the wall for viewers to closely inspect and read. Layne and his family were met by the paparazzo and Daniel was lucky enough to score an interview with the rising young star for his Radio National program, Awaye.
Layne was more then happy to sign copies of his comic for his fans at the Tarnanthi Art Fair.

      Ballad of Nyaparu (William) Gardiner
“We wasn’t allowed to go to school, we wasn’t allowed to get paid money. We worked for flour, sugar, tea. Rations! We went on strike and we become equal. We become recognised as human beings.” – Nyaparu (William) Gardiner
Apart from all this social and historical context, it is clear from this exhibition of Gardiner’s work that his aesthetic is a triumph. His skewwhiff landscapes – detailed here, gestural there – are dreamily conceived and executed, and his figures of odd anatomic proportions often blend into or become the landscape.
For Gardiner, who created almost all of his life’s work at Spinifex Hill Studios between 2014 and 2018, this aesthetic was developed, refined and eventually flourished as appreciation and recognition for his art grew. These years were a time when his body, eyesight and memory were not serving him as faithfully as they had, but from his mind and brush he teased out a powerful, original vision that captured the phenomenal changes he experienced and witnessed in his lifetime.
His contributions to Tarnanthi 2019 are a showcase from these remarkable years and a legacy that will hopefully incite his deserved acclaim.

Triumph for Spinifex Hill Artists at Cossack Art Awards, 2019
Three out of ten prizes, including Best Overall Artwork, go to Spinifex Hill Artists at Cossack, the richest acquisitive art award in regional Australia.
Spinifex Hill Studio artist Gloria was awarded the prize for Best Overall Artwork while Eileen Tinker and Maggie Green were awarded Best Artwork by a Pilbara Artist and Painting by a Pilbara Indigenous Artist.
The 2019 Judges described Gloria’s work as ‘A painterly and abstract piece that feels traditional, but in a western way. The result being a piece that perhaps is pushing the boundaries of what we "think" Indigenous art is. The placement of colours is stunning and creates a rich earthiness and connectivity to Country with an impressionistic blend of both the traditional and non-traditional. An artwork that could happily sit in any contemporary art category internationally and one that we could keep looking at for hours.’
The Cossack Art Awards are presented by City of Karratha and Rio Tinto Western Australia.

A New Perspective: Martu artist Doreen Chapman’s second solo exhibition.
This exhibition showcased works mostly painted during a period of inspired output during early 2019.
